We hope your child has had an enjoyable time in Year 1 so far and we also hope that you can see them developing well in their learning and seeing progress. All of the children have worked hard and we shall be continuing to be setting off, full-steam ahead, with another jam-packed term! I would like to welcome Mrs Williams to the Year 1 team, she will be working part time every morning and providing extra support with small groups in Phonics, English and Maths.

Topic
The topic we will be covering for the Spring Term is Happy, Healthy Me. Learning throughout all Topic lessons, including English, will be centred around this theme. We aim to try out different sports—perhaps your child will find a new favourite! We will also cover many aspects of PSHE which will encourage children to talk about their feelings, share with others and know how to react when someone is discussing their feelings with them. Our writing will be centred around the story of Handa’s Surprise and there will be some food technology based around the story too. We shall also be trying out our own stop-animation films (wish us luck!)...think of Wallace and Gromit—it could be JUST THE SAME as that!!!

Food Tasting
As mentioned above, there will be food tasting involved in activities this half term. If any information has changed from last term (when we asked for your consent to allow your child to partake in food tasting activities) please let us know.


Reading

All children in class are being well supported in their reading at home. All reading is improving well and children are working through the book bands. We hope that children are enjoying the reading challenge to motivate them in their reading at home. May we remind you that Bug Club is also available for every child online. If you have any queries on this (such as username, password or books available) please get in touch. Again, we are providing you with the Common Exception Words for Years 1&2 overleaf. All children should be competently reading and writing those words as soon as possible. Please support them with their learning in this. Please also find on the next page, questions you can ask your child when you hear them read. This encourages children to think about and understand what they have read, by answering your questions. If you wish to document what you discussed during your reading sessions at home, please do so in the home/school diary. Due to time restraints within the classroom, reading books will now only be changed on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

We will however, continue to read with every child at least once a week in school.

Homework
Homework has experienced some changes. We are pleased that we can now offer the children homework that consolidates their learning from their week at school. You may notice a pattern of English, SPaG and Maths homework on rotation BUT that may not always be the case. If we find that one particular subject needs further consolidation at home, this will take priority over the rotation. Homework is handed out on Fridays and should be returned no later than Wednesday. We mark homework on a Wednesday evening, so any books returned later may not be fully marked.

As you know, topic based homework was set before Christmas. One activity from that selection is due back on Friday 2nd February.

Spellings
A set of spellings that include phonic sounds the children are currently learning will be given out in your child’s spelling book on a Friday. These spellings are to be practised with your support and be back in school on Friday, where the children will be tested and a new set given.

PE
A PE kit with all items named, must be in school on a Monday for the week ahead. This can then go home on a Friday or at the end of a half term, to be ready for the next week. We have two PE lessons each week, depending on the weather these may be indoor or outdoor.

Homeroom

Homeroom can be accessed via the website or a downloadable app and will keep parents up to date with the daily goings-on in the Year One classroom! We shall regularly post photos and updates to keep you informed on what the children are doing. If you do not have access to the Year One homeroom, please let me know.

Water bottles and sun hats
Please ensure that your child has a named water bottle in school.
